Around the world, humans have created disconnect against each other just because they are different. We call those inequalities. This inequalities are referring to people instead of math and numbers, they are based on the differences of people and creates negative thoughts about them. There are 3 major inequalities that will probably be in every country, it’s just on a different level in the scale. Those are; gender inequality, racial inequality and wealth inequality. To experience this, teachers tried to let their students play MinecraftEDU and added gender, race and social class. After a few days of experiencing the world that can be real, we have surveyed most of the students in 5th Grade in AIS Elementary School and we got the numbers and facts we need to know. It’s a very surprising thing to learn about.
The survey was sent to every kid in 5th grade and the question was “Which inequalities do you see within your country?” We got 43 responses and it was a surprising result with answers by these choices; Wealth inequality, Gender inequality and none. Some people chose 2 and it meant that there could be more than 1 inequality per country. Usually, the would choose Wealth inequality and Gender inequality most and it’s mostly in responded by Saudi Arabian friends. In observation, I see that Saudi Arabia is very strict at gender inequality rules so that’s why there are many people who chose Gender Inequality for their response. But that’s not all we’ve got, the gender inequality may be a big problem but it’s not the most common inequality people see.
According to this graph below, the most common inequality people see is Wealth inequality. As from what I saw, every country have separated neighbourhood because the Wealthy citizens reported that the Poor citizens are annoying and they always ask for things. But it doesn’t mean that poor citizens are annoying, maybe it’s because of wealthy citizens’ selfishness and they would see it as a negative thing. Some people are happy because they had done something good to another person. “Pass it on.”
These are what people got to say about Gender and Wealth Inequality:
By a middle class citizen in U.S.A who is upset with Gender and Wealth inequality- “I feel mad about this, I want to cry.” It was really hard for this person to go through these problems with both ways, experiencing and seeing other.
Another middle class citizen in U.S.A who was upset about Gender and Wealth inequality said this- “I think it’s very unfair. It’s something we can’t decide and people will treat us differently just because we’re different from them.” Listening to the tone of this person's tone, this person really wants to do something about it.
Still, a very shocking thing appeared on the responses and there were people who chose none. If I would answer and inform about this, every country have an inequality going on in there. But, I’m very curious about the “nones” so I went and ask some citizens that saw no inequality in their country:
A middle class citizen in Saudi Arabia was interview and here is what they said-“I accidentally click on the button that said “none” but what I meant by is Gender inequality.” That was only the first reply, listen to this next one…
A middle class citizen in the United States answered like this- “Oh really, there’s the button “none”. I did not know that. I click on the button I was not expecting.”Just similar to the other one but this one was the most interesting thing...
An upper class citizen in Finland chose that they saw Wealth inequality and none.- “I chose the wealth inequality because I see it very clearly in my country. For the one that I clicked none was because I thought the none means there’s few of the inequalities so I think like that and chose it.”
This survey was send out before different kind of races were given. In real life, racial inequality is a very complicated thing and a very upsetting inequality. Whites were always treated with respect and love unlike the hispanics, blacks... In moments citizens with black, hispanic and somali blood inside them got treated without respect and was overloaded with unequal treatments. If we took the question again with the choice of "racial inequality", as observed, the results will be different from this.
This is a very complicated thing to understand because there are many generations going on with this. Remember that this happen all around the world and people are really upset about it. How can we prevent and protect people from these inequalities?
Here are some ways you could do it:
- Change how you feel towards people who are different from you positively.
- Keep the stereotypes away from your next generation and yourself.
- Make friends with people who have different race, gender, social class… And show others how not very different people really are.
- Donations can help close the gap between poor and wealthy people.
Fight for a better future. Stop inequalities!
Take this survey with the added choice of racial inequality.
